Jens Petter Waernes










NYF’s powerhouse Grand Jury represents the most diverse brain trust of prominent advertising creatives from 50 countries around the globe. This esteemed peer-nominated panel provides a 360-degree creative view of the advertising world today and play an important role in selecting the World’s Best Advertising. NYF’s Grand Jury evaluate entries from over 100 countries worldwide and determine which creative campaigns move on to the medal round.

Jens Waernes currently works as Creative Director at Goodby Silverstein and Partners. Together with his partner, Jon Wolanske, he oversees all the work on Comcast/Xfinity, the agency’s biggest account.

Before moving to California, Jens was Group Creative Director at BBDO New York for six years. During his career, he has worked for DDB Oslo, Scholz & Friends Berlin and Jung von Matt Hamburg. 

His work has been celebrated with multiple awards at Cannes, D&AD, One Show, Clios, London International, New York Festivals, ADC New York, ADC Germany, ADC Europe, YoungGuns, Epica, and Eurobest. The campaigns he created for Augsburger Allgemeine and Ravensburger were among the most celebrated work in the world. 

On Judging: 

New York Festivals: Why judge…and how do you find the time?

Jens Waernes:  Judging is a great opportunity to see what goes on in advertising, globally.
Time is always tight, so I try to bend it. I’m a time bender. It’s part of my job. 

New York Festivals: What cultural/social changes do you think will influence this year’s work?

Jens Waernes:  MeToo, Trump, North Korea, Alt. Right.

New York Festivals: What are your personal criteria for choosing award-winning work? 

Jens Waernes:  The winning work should be brilliant, new and relevant.

New York Festivals: What philosophy drives your career? 

Jens Waernes:  Never stop learning.

New York Festivals: Who gave you your big break in advertising? 

Jens Waernes:  Jung von Matt/9 Hamburg, Germany. Though, I would not say that my big break was “given”. It was taken.

New York Festivals: Did/do you have a mentor and what have you learned from them?

Jens Waernes:  Mom and dad. Paul Malmstrom and Linus Karlsson. Greg Hahn. Be nice and work hard.
